Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most successful film franchises of all time and has generated huge revenue and garnered thousands of fans for Marvel. The series’ brilliant storytelling and characters now remain the most memorable of all time, without which the Marvel mythos of pre-Endgame and after would look incomplete.
However, Marvel wasn’t sure of the franchise’s success so they had a ‘non-Avengers‘ movie prepared just in case. The movie was based on Runaways and was prepared by Jodi Hilderbrand along with writer Drew Pearce and director Peter Sollett.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most memorable and fan-loved franchises of all time. Thanks to the memorable characters, brilliant actors, intriguing storyline, and catchy music, the MCU would be incomplete without it. However, Marvel was afraid that the franchise would bomb so they decided to come up with a brilliant new failsafe under Jodi Hilderbrand, a then-newly hired producer.
The Failsafe was the Runaways movie based on the popular comic book series about teenagers who rebel after finding out their parents are supervillains. The movie was supposed to have been a coming-of-age film with the teenagers finally stepping foot into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the end of the movie.
Soon after director Peter Sollett was roped in by Hilderbrand, who already had some experience in the genre and filmed characters of a similar age range. Furthermore, writer Drew Pearce was hired who wanted the movie to be more cinematic. Pearce’s hiring was a tale of its own, and accidental, he had to send a bold and heartfelt letter after getting stuck in LA due to the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption back in Iceland.

Despite The Screenplay, Marvel’s Runaways Movie Was Shelved
When the writer Drew Pearce came on board, he was pretty excited about the Runaways movie and spent his weekend reading and dissecting the first two volumes of the story. Soon enough, after a careful consideration process, the idea was brought down to two and Pearce went to director Peter Sollet to discuss it.
The work went pretty well and all notes he had received were positively encouraging. However, it soon became clear that Marvel’s schedule was filled up with The Avengers and subsequent movies that would further the storyline.
And just as he had feared, one fateful day in London the writer got a call from Hilderbrand. he stepped out in the rain to take the call and was informed the movie was ‘dead’ and would not be ‘going forward’.
The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise can be streamed on Disney+.
