Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the most perfect way possible. Following the character of Tony Stark, the film showed the perfect story of someone who thought of themselves to be God, kicked down, and showcased the realities of their life, coming back, stronger than ever. Before this film, however, there were many different tries of bringing this universe to life.
The most famous example of something like this would be the Black Widow film, which was supposed to come out long before any of the main MCU movies came. Another film that can be added to this list, was one of Captain America, however, this looks a lot different than Chris Evans’ version of the character, being almost like Will Ferrell’s Elf.

A Captain America Film Before Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man?
The Captain America that we know and love is an extremely serious and morally good character. The films follow a similar approach and tone, falling in the category of much more serious films in the MCU compared to projects like Ant-Man, and the Spider-Man trilogy. These three films, Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War, follow very dark themes, following a serious antagonist, HYDRA, corruption, and a lot at stake. This is what fans think of when thinking of this character.
However, this is not at all what the original film was going to be like. According to a leak on Reddit, Jon Favreau and Avi Arad wanted to follow a completely different theme for this film, whose idea was kicked around long before Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man came out, or was even under production. This film was going to be a lot different than what we know now to be Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, following a much more comedic take on a squeaky-clean soldier from the 1940s, who was trying to adjust to the modern world.

What Would This FIlm Be Like?
This Captain America film was set to follow quite a different theme, even when it comes to its comedic nature. It was expected that this film would follow a similar general atmosphere to Will Ferrell’s 2003 film, Elf. It feels quite odd for Jon Favreau and Avi Arad to take inspiration from this film, considering that it is a family, Christmas movie, about a human who is raised amongst elves at the North Pole.
We can see why it could have been considered the inspiration, however, it should also be considered that Favreau was a part of the cast of the film, playing the role of Dr. Leonardo. Regardless of this, it is quite odd to imagine one of the most favorite film series among fans of the MCU, to have this sort of tone. It might not be too far-fetched to say that many fans are glad that this did not happen.
